ALL BIDDERS PLEASE READ
Terms Governing This Sale
Bidders unknown to us will please furnish bank or other references or
deposit 25 per cent with their bids, and it is agreed that remittance will be
made upon receipt of invoice if references are not furnished.
Any coin which is not satisfactory may be returned within five days from
date of receipt for full refund. You must be satisfied. PAYMENT TO BE
MADE UPON RECEIPT OF MERCHANDISE. Coins remain our property until
paid for. There will be no charge for executing your bids but the purchasers
will be required to pay the postage and insurance on their purchases, if you
do not wish coins sent airmail please note this on your bid sheet.
We shall welcome your bids and will try to purchase the coins as much
below your bids as possible. PLEASE BID BY THE LOT. Unlimited bids are
executed at an advance of 5 per cent over the next highest bid. Numbers in
v } are the quantity of that item.
if you are interested in any particular coin, we shall be glad to have you
write us for full information. LOTS CANNOT BE BROKEN. Be sure you bid
on the correct lot as we cannot be responsible for errors in bidding.
NOTICE TO NEW BIDDERS
Our Mail Sales Are Conducted As Follows:
1. Bids are entered in the order received; if identical bids are received,
the first bidder is awarded the lot. SEND BIDS AIRMAIL — IT PAYS.
2. The highest bidder on the date of the sale is awarded the coin at a
slight advance over the second highest bidder. Bids you send in are the maxi-
mum you are willing to pay for the coin. WE, AS YOUR AGENT, TRY TO
BUY THE COIN AS LOW AS THE NEXT HIGHEST BID WILL ALLOW.
3. Valuations placed in the auction catalog are catalog prices, prices gen-
erally asked by dealers when the coin is in stock, or prices generally realized
at auctions.
ANY COIN WHICH IS NOT AS REPRESENTED MAY BE RETURNED
WITHIN FIVE DAYS FROM DATE OF RECEIPT FOR FULL REFUND. YOU
TO BE THE SOLE JUDGE AS TO CONDITION. YOU MUST BE SATISFIED.
No, you won’t receive a nasty letter for returning a coin — instead you will re-
ceive a letter thanking you for calling attention to the error made in cata-
loging. While we try to describe coins as accurately as possible, it is inevitable
that an occasional error is made in the cataloging of thousands of coins for each
sale. Whenever this happens, we want it called to our attention to help
prevent future errors.
Any coins may be inspected prior to the sale, collector to pay postage and
insurance both ways.
If you are not interested in these sales, won't you advise us so we may
discontinue sending you catalogs.

YOU WILL WANT A PRICE LIST OF THIS SALE
TO KNOW WHAT COINS ARE BRINGING
PRICE LIST OF SALE $1.00
IS THIS YOUR FIRST AUCTION CATALOG?
Slst EDITION (1968) GUIDE BOOK, (1965) PAPER MONEY 5th EDITION
“TRENDS” AND OTHER AUCTION RECORDS USED IN CATALOGING.
Occasionally a collector writes us asking why our estimated values in some instances
are higher than the catalog listing. This occurs when the demand is so great and the
supply so small that new records are set whenever these come upon the market. If one
will take a few moments to reflect, he will understand that it takes several months to
compile the necessary information before the catalog can be published, therefore, it is
inevitable that the catalog listing will be under the prevailing market price on the items
in popular demand at the time of the publication. The estimated prices are entered only
after careful examination of various records and publications which reflect the actual
and not theoretical values. (PLEASE NOTE THAT MANY OF THE ESTIMATES ARE CATA-
LOG VALUE ONLY. MANY OF THE GOLD COINS, SILVER $1, WASHINGTON QUARTERS,
CURRENCY, ETC. ARE ESTIMATED AT CATALOG). In the final analysis, you the collector,
are the one who sets the price.
BIDS ARE RECORDED AS FOLLOWS: Each bid sheet is given a number as it comes
in, and the bids are recorded. In the event of identical bids, the first bidder receives the
'ot. At the last day of the sale, the books are closed with the highest bidder on each lot
being awarded the lot at an advance of not over 5% above the next highest bidder. For
i lustration — the two highest bids received on a lot may be $17 and $20. The highest bid-
der who bid $20 would receive the lot at $17.50. We act as your agent and use your bids
as a limit — not as a final bid unless we are forced to do so to obtain the lot. We accept
unlimited bids which generally assures the bidder of obtaining that lot regardless of what
the highest bid may be. Where the lot is bringing far more than we believe it is worth, or
in the event of two unlimited bidders on the same lot, we notify the unlimited bidders by
phone or wire, if necessary, in order to obtain a fixed limit to the bid. Even tho auction
purchases are supposed to be final, we do not want you to keep any lots which you be-
lieve are improperly described. We endeaver to treat our customers as we would wish to
be treated. We try to keep it on a friendly basis and va'ue the many friends we have made
thru the years. If you have any complaints, we want to hear them, as well as any compli-
ments.
YOUR SUCCESSFUL BIDS WILL INSURE YOUR RECEIVING
SUCCESSIVE CATALOGS WITHOUT INTERRUPTION
BARGAINS
In every sale, some lots go at “bargain prices.” May we suggest that in addition to
bidding on those lots you “really want,” you place nominal bids on those lots that “you
might buy if they went at bargain prices.” While you may not obtain many of these “bar-
gain lots”, yet in every sale you may pick up some real bargains.
Sincerely,
A. M. KAGIN and PAUL KAGIN

YOU MUST BE SATISFIED
Our Sales Are Cataloged With You in Mind. If you have any suggestions,
complaints, (yes we receive some now and then), we want to hear them. Having
catalogued over two hundred seventy successful coin sales, we believe we are
qualified to advise and help you with your numismatic problems. No, we don’t
‘ know-it-all” but we do know where to obtain the information we don’t have.
We have a number of want lists on hand for the scarce and rare United
States coins and currency. Our average commission for obtaining these speci-
mens is only 10 per cent, therefore we believe we can pay the top price for
your choice and scarce pieces, no matter how rare. Don’t you think it is worth
a 8c airmail stamp to find out what we would pay for your outstanding pieces?
Naturally we buy collections, too.

SOMETHING NEW HAS BEEN ADDED
We wish to call your attention to the new service extended as per the bottom
if the bid sheet. After receiving requests to apply the amount saved in the award-
ing of successful bids below the bids authorized we decided to avail this service
to all of our clients. It is often exasperating to lose a lot by a few nickels when
the amount saved on the successful bids would have been sufficient to increase
the original bid to the point necessary to receive the lot. Check the bottom of
your bid sheet.
Postal regulations require Zip Codes. To continue
receiving these catalogs be sure you send us this Zip
Code.

463—1848 PERFECT BRILLIANT SLIGHTLY BLUISH SHARP STRUCK PROOF!
A MAGNIFICENT SPECIMEN OF THE MEDIUM DATE. ACQUIRED AS
“SMALL DATE, EXCESSIVELY RARE” AT $1,000.00. At first glance it does
appear to be a small date and not into base as the medium date of the
next lot. While it might possibly be a shade smaller the next (usual type)
medium size date, we hesitate to call it a true small date. Regardless of
what it is called, we believe this MAGNIFICENT PROOF is well worth the 1,000.00

EXTREMELY RARE 1870-S $1
1162— From a 1964 sale described “1870-S THE PRIZE OF THIS SALE. We have
traced the pedigree of this RARITY back to a 1957 New York sale wherein
• it was described as follows: ‘1870-S ONE OF THE RAREST COINS IN THE
U.S. SERIES. This is the Hesslein-World’ Greatest Collection-Skinner
specimen. This coin is a very fine specimen, but at one time some sort of
roughness was in the obverse field. This impairment has been removed.
ONLY 6 OR 7 ARE KNOWN TO EXIST. THIS FACT PLACES THIS COIN IN
THE CLASS OF THE 1804 DOLL!’ Since then, this coin has acquired a nice
toning giving it an attractive appearance. The impairment can only be
noticed by holding it at a slant, and then only on close inspection. It is
mounted in a plastic holder. The reverse is quite sharp, indeed it is rather
close to Uncirculated with a nice luster. Fortunately, we have a fairly
recent record in order to determine its present value. The Wolfson collec-
tion sold in New York in May (1963) had an 1804 dollar which realized
$36,000.00. It also contained a specimen of the 1870-S. Upon comparing the
photograph of the Wolfson specimen with the one in this sale, we note our
specimen has a sharper obverse. The reverse of our specimen is at least
a FULL GRADE BETTER THAN THE WOLFSON COIN. Mr. Wolfson bought
his very fine coin out of the Fairbanks sale in 1960 at $9,000.00. When it
was auctioned in May (1963) it was sold at $12,000.00. With the rise in
market values since then, we believe this great rarity will now realize
closer to 15,000.00.”
Now, three years later, we feel this great rarity can set a new record.

Consignment C — Washington
TYPE SET $20 GOLD, PROOF & UNO.
1423—1864 NO MOTTO, BRILLIANT GEM PROOF! A MAGNIFICENT SPECIMEN
OF THIS GREAT RARITY! It is exceedingly difficult to place a value on
this great rarity. The great Wolfson sale (Oct. 1962) contained 38 different
dates of proof double eagles starting 1859 but did not contain this date!
A leading authority has estimated that “15 or so were struck in proof from
1859 through 1864”. We doubt if half that number are still in existence now,
over a century later. Possibly an equal specimen may exist but certainly
no superior one! The owner states, “The catalog values the 1904 (98 struck)
at $2400, 1905 (92struck) at $2600 and 1906 (94 struck) at $2500; I feel this
EXCESSIVELY RARE DATE AND TYPE IN PRISTINE CONDITION IS WELL
worth 7,500.00.”
1424—1866 WITH MOTTO, “TWENTY D”, BRILLIANT PROOF. RARE TYPE. This is the
gold plated copper piece purchased in our January 1966 sale (ONLY 4 to 12
STRUCK) and valued then, nearly two years ago, at 750.00
Page Thirty-five
TYPE SET $20 GOLD, PROOF & UNC. (Cont.)
1425— 1906 “TWENTY DOLLARS”, BRILLIANT AND CHOICE PROOF! ONLY 94
STRUCK OF WHICH ONLY A VERY FEW ARE STILL IN THIS REMARKABLE
CONDITION. Acquired from our Sept. 1965 sale where it was valued $3,000.00.
The catalog has a valuation of $2,500.00 for this date but this premium speci-
men should surely be worth closer to the 3,000.00
1426— 1907 HIGH RELIEF, ROMAN NUMERALS (MCMVII) flat rim variety. A CHOICE
UNCIRCULATED, SHARPLY STRUCK SPECIMEN OF THIS BEAUTIFUL DE-
SIGN! Certainly a premium coin worth over its catalog valuation of $800;
probably closer to 900.00
1427 — 1908 Arabic (normal) numerals, NO MOTTO, Brilliant Uncirculated. Cat 87.50
1428— 1908 IN GOD WE TRUST added by Cogress, 46 STARS (states) Brilliant Un-
circulated (gem except for pinpoint nick). LOW ISSUE. Rare so choice. Cata-
logs too low at 90.00
1429 — 1914-D 48 STARS (Arizona & New Mexico became states 1912) Brilliant Un-
circulated (gem except for tiny nick). Catalogs 90.00
TYPE SET $10 GOLD, CHOICE
1430—1796 8x8 STARS (16 states) SMALL EAGLE, PROOFLIKE. A lovely specimen
(sometimes offered by the newer dealers as a full “PROOF”). We note a
persistent advance in value from year to year reflecting its popularity.
Acquired several years ago when it was valued $3,500; we have since seen
a similar specimen offered at 4,000.00
1431_1797 10x6 STARS, LARGE HERALDIC EAGLE, UNCIRCULATED. A choice sharp
struck specimen. Popular with a persistent advance in value. A premium
specimen easily worth 1,750.00
1432—1798 OVER 97, STAR PLACEMENT CHANGED TO 9x4, from our sale of a
year ago (the last coin acquired for the type set — owner states he
searched many years to find this choice specimen) described as “BRIL-
LIANT UNCIRCULATED WITH PROOFLIKE SURFACE. A MAGNIFICENT
SPECIMEN ACQUIRED AS “FINEST KNOWN” AT 5,000.00. Since we have
not seen a superior specimen in all our thirty-odd years as professionals,
this claim could be valid.” We note the current catalog has advanced its
value again
1433— 1803 8x5 STARS, stars somewhat larger, UNCIRCULATED SHARP STRUCK!
A premium specimen indeed! Acquired three years ago when it was valued
$1,500; probably now worth over 1,650.00
1434— 1839 REDUCED SIZE, LOOP FROM EAR, LARGE LETTERS, virtually Uncircu-
lated SHARP STRUCK, slight friction in field, much luster in evidecne at
stars, bust and eagle, SHARP HAIR IN BUST. VERY RARE SO CHOICE. This
is the choicest specimen the owner could find in his many year searching.
Since this type was struck only in the latter part of 1838 and early part of
1839, it is in strong demand. We cannot recall seeing a choicer specimen,
therefore we must conclude that this is CONDITION CENSUS! We feel this
remarkably choice specimen is worth 1,000.00
1435— 1848 DIFFERENT BUST, NO MOTTO, Brilliant Uncirculated, pinpoint nick
takes it out of the gem class. RARE SO CHOICE 135.00

takes it out of the gem class. Catalogs 50.00

TYPE SET $5 GOLD, CHOICE
1438—1795 10x5 STARS (states) SMALL EAGLE, a choice specimen but we cannot
quite accept it for the Sharp “Uncirculated” for which it was acquired.
While it is a nice sharp specimen, it does have the usual trace of rubbing
so characteristic of these large soft old gold coins. The catalog value for
uncirculated has been advanced to 2.400.00

PROOF COMMEMORATIVE HALF DOLLARS & 25c
The “commonest” (1926 Hawaii) is listed in the Guidebook as 50 were struck; nearly
all the others are so rare (1 to 6 known) that the Guidebook does not even mention them.
The Standard Catalog of United States Coins lists some of the known proofs.
1498— 1892 BRILLIANT SLIGHTLY BLUISH PROOF 100.00
1499— 1893 Bluish golden Proof 85.00
1500 — 1893 Isabella quarter , BRILLIANT PROOF, RARE 500.00
1501 — 1920 Pilgrim, acquired as a PROOF (it does have a lovely bluish proof surface)
however it does not have quite all the characteristics generally associated
with proofs. Cost 500.00
1502—1921 PILGRIM, LOVELY GOLDEN MATTE PROOF! ACQUIRED FROM DAVID
BULLOWA (Philadelphia) MANY YEARS AGO. BELIEVED TO BE UNIQUE!
Since we have no record of another specimen (we handled this identical
specimen nearly 8 years ago) we see no reason not to accept the belief as
to its being unique. Easily worth $2,500; possibly over 3,0000.0
Page Thirty-eight
1503—1921 MISSOURI 2x4, LOVELY BLUISH MATTE PROOF! ACQUIRED FROM
STACK’S MANY YEARS AGO (when at 46th St.). ALSO "BELIEVED TO BE
UNIQUE!” Easily worth $2,500; possibly over 3,000.00
1504— 1922 GRANT STAR, LOVELY BLUISH MATTE PROOF WITH UNUSUALLY
HIGH EDGE BOTH SIDES. ACQUIRED FROM STACK’S SAME TIME AS
ABOVE. The Standard Catalog of U.S. Coins knew of the existence of a speci-
men; whether this is that identical specimen or another, we cannot de-
termine. Easily worth 2,500.00
1505— 1925 VANCOUVER, LOVELY BLUISH MATTE PROOF WITH UNUSUALLY HIGH
EDGE BOTH SIDES. ACQUIRED FROM DAVID BULLOWA MANY YEARS AGO.
Also listed in Standard Catalog; whether this is that identical specimen, we
cannot determine. Since David Bullowa was a knowledgeable professional
numismatist and a contributor to the earlier Standard Catalogs, there is a
strong possibility that this specimen may be the basis of that listing. Easily
worth 2,500.00
1506— 1928 HAWAIIAN, LOVELY BLUISH MATTE PROOF. The "commonest” of the
matte proof commemoratives. Of the only 50 struck, a leading authority states
that he believes “only about a dozen or so still exist — the others have been
“cleaned” or mishandled, ruining them as proofs.” Listed in Guidebook but
UNPRICED! The last specimen we saw, changed hands at 1,250.00
1507— 1934 MARYLAND, LOVELY BLUISH MATTE PROOF. ACQUIRED FROM DAVID
BULLOWA YEARS AGO. Also listed in Standard Catalog (based on this speci-
men?) Easily worth 2,500.00
1508— 1938 NEW ROCHELLE, BRILLIANT PROOF WITH RAISED EDGE BOTH
SIDES. We note the Hydeman Collection (March, 1961 sale by Kosoff) con-
tained a similar specimen which then, 6V2 years ago, realized $310; we believe
its present value closer to 750.00
GEM UNCIRCULATED COMMEMORATIVE HALF DOLLARS

PROOF GOLD COMMEMORATIVES
While the Guidebook lists two (both 1903 varieties) the Standard Catalog of U.S.
Coins is more complete listing five different. All are RARE with most EXTREMELY RARE!
Do not confuse these with proof-surface or first-strike specimens which (upon our exami-
nation) usually are the “proofs” which are occasionally offered.
1520— $1 1903 Jefferson, BRILLIANT PROOF with RAISED EDGE BOTH SIDES. Very
few of the ONLY 100 STRUCK have survived. A leading authority states, “I
doubt if more than a dozen or so still exist.” Our 264th Sale contained a spec-
imen which realized $1,600; what its present value might be will have to be
determined by you, the bidder

PROOF GOLD COMMEMORATIVES (Cont.)
1521— $1 1903 McKinley, IN ORIGINAL PRESENTATION FRAME! Accompanying
it is page 36 of the COIN WORLD of February 22, 1963 containing the Tull
page ad of one of the older dealers (in business over 25 years) with the
following included in the ad: ‘MAY BE UNIQUE, A 1903 PROOF JEFFER-
SON GOLD DOLLAR, in original frame, with wax seal and ribbon, as put
out by the mint, with signatures of mint officials, and the wording “ONE
OF THE FIRST HUNDRED JEFFERSON GOLD DOLLARS.” I bought this
about 20 years ago in one of Bolender’s auctions, and have never seen
one advertised since, which leads me to believe that most or all of the
other 99 frames were destroyed and the coins removed. I believe similar
frames were issued of the 1903 McKinley Dollar, but have never seen
them offered. This item certainly is of far greater numismatic interest than
a set of the 11 Unc. gold Comm., and much less at 1,500.00
This, of course, is the McKinley in frame which he believed was issued
but which he never saw! Now, A¥z years later, we believe this great rarity
is worth over $2,500; probably closer to 3,000.00
1522— $1 1904 Lewis & Clark, BRILLIANT PROOF! Listed in Standard Catalogue
of U. S. Coins. VERY RARE! The most recent specimen we saw was in
1964 at $2,500; surely this one should now realize 3,900.00
1523 — $1 1905 Lewis & Clark, Brilliant PROOFLIKE rather than the full proof vor
which it was acquired. Some of these, like the gold dollars of the 1880’s can
be rather deceptive. Acquired over a decade ago at 550.00
1524— $1 1916 McKinley Memorial, BRILLIANT PROOF with RAISED EDGE BOTH j
SIDES, light line on cheek. Also listed in Standard Catalogue (as are the
four above coins). VERY RARE 1,900.00
1525— $1 1917 McKinley Memorial, BRILLIANT PROOF with RAISED EDGE BOTH
SIDES. VERY RARE 1,000.90

ING RARITY! Careful check of the 273 sales in our thirty-four years as profes-

1858 PROOFS! In addition, it appears to be THE MOST DIFFICULT TO OB-
TAIN CHOICE! If rarity is any criterion, this fantastic specimen should be
worth close to 1,000.00
